Yoga to Compliment…GAA
Did you know that the Dubs (Dublin Senior GAA football team – for those reading outside of Ireland!) are big fans of yoga and have incorporated it into previous training schedules? I might be slightly biased on this one but they are definitely onto something!
Many sports teams use and have used yoga as a tool to physically and mentally challenge and prepare the players for tournaments/big matches. Controlled breathing is essential for athletic performance so by incorporating yogic breathing which is designed to support the nervous system (stimulating the Parasympathic nervous system or rest & digest mechanism), reduce stress and improve reactions into a team’s weekly routine, it can increase focus and concentration, builds stamina and increases vital capacity leading to high performance. It’s also a great way to cope with nerves and pressure on a big game day.
I always start a class with some breath work, a deep inhale followed by a long, slow exhale and by using the rhythm of the breath throughout the class, it can really help to focus the mind and improve concentration.
Another major benefit of yoga to GAA players is injury prevention and mobility/flexibility improvement. Muscles become tight and inflexible through persistent over use and misuse (think of my rubber band analogy from my last blog post on injuries) and lot of common GAA injuries like hamstring, groin and Achilles tears and strains are mainly a result of lack of flexibility. Therefore by working through yoga poses to strengthen and lengthen these areas it can reduce the risk of injury as well as helping the player(s) to move better.
It aides players' recovery, both physically and mentally while also adding to their overall physical development as well-rounded athletes.
The main benefits of yoga for GAA players and athletes are:
1. Improves flexibility, mobility and range of motion
2. Helps achieve proper alignment of the body leading to efficiency of movement and therefore more power
3. Greater endurance
4. Develops better balance, stability and awareness of the position and movement of the body
5. Enhances clarity and focuses the mind
6. Increases joint stability
7. Strengthens & lengthens muscles
8. Builds core strength & stability
9. Develops breath control & body awareness
10. Aides in passive and active recovery
If you know of any teams that you think could benefit from some yoga classes, please do send me a DM! I would love to help😊
